If you don’t know whether Triphala is right for you, please consult an Ayurvedic practitioner who will determine the right course of treatment for your body.

What is Triphala?
Triphala is an Ayurvedic herb formula composed of the fruits of three trees (tri= three, phala=fruit): Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki. It has been used for centuries to cure all sorts of health issues. It is not very well-known yet in the West but it should be because it is a truly miraculous cure with tons of uses and no dangerous side-effects, unlike many prescription drugs.

Triphala powder is made from these three fruits:

Amalaki, also called Indian gooseberry, is native to tropical southeastern Asia. Revered by the Hindus, it is said to cure almost any disease and to extend longevity. It contains 5 out of the 6 tastes recognized by Ayurveda (which is rare) and balances all three doshas. It rejuvenates and promotes longevity; enhances digestion, treats constipation, reduces fever, purifies the blood, reduces cough, alleviates asthma, strengthens the heart, benefits the eyes, stimulates hair growth, enlivens the body and enhances the intellect.

How to take Triphala?
As a tea: For many people, this is the most effective way, though you have to get past the taste. But it’s worth it!

With honey

With ghee

Capsules: Some people never get past the taste of Triphala, and if you have a choice between taking it in capsule form and not taking it at all, then take the capsules.
Look for a brown bottle (why?). Cf. Banyan Botanicals.
Take capsules with hot water.

What’s better–capsules or tablets? Himalaya Triphala is a tablet, Banyan is a capsule. One Amazon review says the results are similar. Another says the capsules worked better for him than the tablets.
Take tablets with warm water?.

The best time of day to take Triphala?
Triphala should always be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1.5 hours after your last meal. Because it cleans and detoxifies the digestive system, drinking it after eating would disturb digestion and result in cramps.

The best time of day to take Triphala is the one prescribed to you by your Ayurvedic practioner. If you are taking Triphala of your own volition, I encourage you to experiment and see the effects of taking it at different times of the day on your body.

Triphala capsules: You can take these before dinner and have a bowel movement that evening or the next morning.

From my own experimenting, I have noticed that:
– When I take triphala in the evening before bed I sleep better. If I’ve eaten foods that I don’t tolerate or digest well, I find that the triphala reduces or eliminates the unpleasant symptoms caused by those foods. For example, it noticeably reduces the effects of gluten sensitivity. I don’t wake up foggy-brained.
– When I take triphala in the morning I have a bowel movement an hour later. The triphala seems to stimulate my digestive system and the BM happens effortlessly.
I’ve also read that taking Triphala in the evening is best if you are looking to detoxify your body and lose weight. Taking triphala in the morning acts more like a tonic, giving you energy.
I’ve also heard of people taking Triphala three times a day, between meals, in an effort to lose weight. That said, the traditional times to take triphala are morning and evening.

Is there a specific time to take triphala?
Every part of the body has its favorite time.

what is the best time of day to clean the digestive system?

How often to take Triphala?
Some recommend 3 times a day, but most often it’s morning and evening. But after trying that for a while you can experiment with it and see. Perhaps once a day is enough. Maybe even skipping a day is fine for you. Listen to your body and your intuition, as well as your Ayurvedic Practitioner!

Can you take triphala over the long term?
When to stop taking triphala?
You can know intuitively:

– you forget to take it for long periods of time

– or when it’s time to take it you have a slight feeling of repulsion (not because of the taste, but because of the idea of taking it)
This might be also because you are detoxing (ex: for me, it’s harder to take Triphala when I’m eating a lot of cheese; I should stop cheese and see if my body’s more willing to take the Triphala)

You can trust your intuition.
But what if your digestive issues are not solved?

Should you wean off Triphala?

What amount of Triphala is too much?

You can have an allergy to one of the fruits of triphala. Try taking the other two separately so you can still have some of the effects (like the laxative effects)

Some have reported negative side-effects: headache, heart pounding, chest pains. Not sure why.

The Benefits of Triphala

Sleeping better after taking Triphala at night? Many people report that they sleep better and wake up more rested after taking Triphala before bed. That has been my experience. My theory is that because Triphala cleans your digestive system, your body can spend more time resting rather than doing all the hard work itself. Especially if you have food sensitivities, your body does not have to work so hard to overcome them all night.
You sleep better, so you wake up more rested and therefore in a better mood.

Clears the digestive system. Good if you have diverticulosis.
Some people report a BM 30minutes after taking the capsules. For most people, they are assured a healthy BM in the morning.
For many, this is the only remedy for chronic constipation that works, with no side-effects.
Resolves IBS issues. For ex, ulcerative colitis (you can take your IBD inflammatory bowel disease drugs with it, no contra-indication).
If you need to take iron supplements and they are constipating, Triphala helps.
It’s a gentle laxative, so for most people their bowel movements will be healthy, not too watery but not hard and dry.
Good if you get constipated when traveling or stressed out. No side effects like regular laxatives (research short and long-term effects of Senna and other laxatives. Irritating to the colon, cannot be taken over the long term; cramping/pain).

Detox. Reduces ama/toxins.

Weight loss, especially visible in the stomach (perhaps due to less ama, bloating, reactions to foods).

May also reduce gas.

Reduces bloating.

Immune booster (also good when traveling).
Very high vitamin D.

Side effects of rebalancing the doshas.
Someone who is very constipated has too much dryness. Taking triphala helps moisten the system, and they may find that it improves their dry skin and hair, their body’s aches and pains (arthritis?).

Since it’s cleansing, there may be some unpleasant short-term effects if detox. For me: nausea.

Not addictive and no dangerous side effects. You can reduce or increase the dose as needed.

You get cleaned out and feel lighter and more energized as a result.

If you take it at night you have your BM in the morning before school or work, which is practical and healthy.

Digestion and Colon cleansing

So many people suffer from problems related to the colon (or large intestine): gas, bloating, constipation, extra weight around the midsection… Undigested food putrifies in the colon and leads to all sorts of diseases.
Triphala is a very easy way to clean out your colon.

Vegan Chipotle Carrot Queso

Last week, my friend introduced this recipe to me. It sounded interesting and was really tasty as well. Carrots bring slight sweetness and authentic yellow hue to this vegan, dairy-free queso recipe. Chipotle peppers bring smoky spiciness while nutritional yeast brings cheesy flavor vegan recipe. You can serve this vegan queso with chips as one dip. You can also drizzle the mixture over burritos, nachos, enchiladas or other Mexican dishes with complementary flavors! Let’s cook this dish.

You need to prepare:

Recipe yields three cups queso.

– 3 large carrots, peeled and chopped

– 4 cloves of garlic, minced or pressed

– 1 chopped small yellow or white onion

–  1 cup of raw cashews, soaked for a minimum of two hours

– 1½ tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil

– For taste: 3-4 tablespoons of nutritional yeast flakes,

– 1¼ cups of vegetable broth

– ½ teaspoon of ground cumin

– 1 – 3 tablespoons of adobo sauce

– For taste: Freshly ground black pepper

– ½ teaspoon of salt, more to taste

Suggested mix-ins and garnishes:

– 1 drained small can green chilis

2 tablespoons of pickled jalapeño peppers, finely chopped (optional)

– Big handful of chopped cherry tomatoes

– Handful of chopped fresh cilantro

Step by step directions:

Take a medium-sized pot and warm the olive oil in it over medium heat. Next, add the onions, garlic, chopped carrots, together with a dash of salt.

– Cook around eight minutes, stirring continuously, until the carrots are tender and the onions are translucent. Remove from heat.

– Combine the cashews, carrot-onion mixture and vegetable broth in a blender. Add nutritional yeast (3 tablespoons), adobo sauce (1 tablespoon), salt (½ teaspoon) and cumin (½ teaspoon). Puree this mixture until it is smooth absolutely.

– Taste and adjust as needed –for more cheesy flavor, you can add more nutritional yeast and/or for more heat, you can add more adobo sauce. Season to taste with black pepper and salt and blend again.

– Then, you pour warm the queso back into that pot and warm it over medium heat. Stir often, until warmed through.

-Stir the optional chopped jalapeños and drained green chilis into the mixture. After that, take a serving bowl and pour it into it.

–  Top with cilantro, chopped cherry tomatoes, and more jalapeños, if desired. Dig in!

Try this dish and let me know your thoughts!

List of worst foods for depression

Sometimes, as we are depressed, we choose eating foods to help us deal with the situation or to make ourselves feel better. Unluckily, the foods we eat can provide opposite effects. Consuming junk foods when you are depressed may actually make your situation turn bad. Some of the worst triggers are food items containing high levels of the following:

  • Caffeine
  • Heavily processed ingredients
  • Refined sugars
  • Saturated fats

Following a healthy diet and a regular exercise routine can help people control and reduce signs and symptoms of depression. It might even entirely beat off them.

Consuming main meals regularly on time is the very first key deciding a healthy diet plan. The next key would be opting for the right healthy food items to consume.

Worst Foods For Depression – Bad Foods To Avoid

  1. Alcohol And Illegal Drugs

When you are feeling depressed, it could be simple to turn to alcohol or any other method of “self-drug.” You might get a short-term relief, but these substances often just turn everything worse. Drugs and alcohol throw off our sleep cycles, and lead to anxiety and mood swings. If you are using any prescription medication, drugs and alcohol can force us to experience negative side impacts, and they can even inhibit the work and effects of medications.

Consume a prestigious doctor if you are facing trouble abstaining from alcohol or drugs. The doctors may suggest patients to programs which aim to help them get sober.

 2. Sugary Foods And Caffeine

Caffeine may be difficult for several people to quit in their diet completely. Nevertheless, it is ideal to just drink caffeinated beverages in moderation, especially as you are facing depression-like signs. Caffeine can make you feel anxious and disrupt sleep patterns, both of which will not help you in fighting against depression. Those drinking over 400 mgs of caffeine per day, the equivalent of 4 brewed coffee cups, need to cut back.

Staying far away from refined sugary food items is also a good method that can help to improve our moods. Sugar may make people feel more energized initially, but it will not last for long. Instead, you should opt for food items that would help to stabilize your blood sugar levels.

  1. Trans-Fats

Trans-fat is the way people call unsaturated-fats that do not often occur in whole food items. Just in the 1950s, trans-fats became commonly used in things, including packaged baked goods, snack foods, margarine, and oils used in frying fast foods. According to a research published in PLOS ONE, taking artery-clogging trans-fats could raise your risks of depression by as much as 48%. In the contrary, a lot of researches have shown that a Mediterranean diet, which can utilize olive oil rather than trans-fats traditionally, can reduce the risks of many health diseases, including depressed feelings.

  1. Fast Foods

Are they easy and cheap? In a short term, it is kind of things that can help to save your time and money. However, once factor in the modifications can make to our physical and mental health, the true cost of those cheap foods could get steep real within a short time period. According to a research conducted in 2012, people consuming fast foods regularly developed higher risks of depression than those who do not consume these foods. To clarify: when people say fast food, they are talking about hot dogs, hamburgers, commercial baked goods, and pizza. Consuming a small portion of any fast food would not increase the risks of depression in general, but if you see Popeye, The Colonel, Wendy, or Ronald regularly, a drastic dietary adjustment will be a big step toward less depression and happier feelings.

  1. High – Sodium Foods

Over tens of years, fat-free food items have been touted as they can help a lot in losing weight. However, many of these products have mini sodium mountains. Professionals said that all that extra salts could futz totally with our moods as the high levels of sodium contained within these products could disrupt some of our neurological system aspects. This can not only contribute to depressed feelings directly, but can lead to fatigue and “monkey” with our immune system response as well. An over-taxed body is one way to get disruption going towards our emotional state. Besides, certainly, excessive amounts of salt can also cause bloating and fluid retention. Like several other foods on the list today, salt can cause unintentional weight gain, bringing about a negative building image and making depression even worse.

  1. Hydrogenated Oil

French fries, fried calamari, fried cheese sticks, fried chicken – people will not ever see these items marked as an “eat me” food item. They can lead your body to health troubles due to several reasons and can also make your weight increase unintentionally and unhealthily. However, there’s more: these food items are also a cause of depressed feelings. Hydrogenation is a process which may turn veggie oil into a new form that is more solid, making it a more shelf-stable item. Any food cooked with hydrogenated oils and has trans-fats can contribute to depressed feelings and anxiety potentially. Saturated fats, which could be found in butter, high-fat dairy, and deli meats can clog arteries and prevent the blood from flowing to our brain – and optimal brain functions are what all of us want, if we are trying to stop the blues.

  1. Artificial Sweeteners

Do not think that just because artificial sweeteners do not sugar, then they will allow us to humor our sweet tooth without increasing our risks of depressed feelings and anxiety. Aspartame, the common (and very harmful) ingredient that we can find in some items, such as diet soda, can block the neurotransmitter serotonin production. This can lead to all manner of neuro maladies, such as insomnia, headaches, mood changes, and of course, depression. However, it is not just aspartame: Equal or NutraSweet may also be negative for our mental health.

The entire list above reveals some of the worst foods for depression that people should not look down. If readers want to ask anything about the article today, feel free to leave comments and feedbacks on the section below.
