The impact of suppressing natural urges on general health is a unique concept given by Ayurveda. What are natural urges or Vegas

Natural physical urges can be described as nervous impulses generated by body. These are signals send by body when it requires food, water, rest or throwing out of waste products. Urges can also be mentally related in the form of thoughts, frustration, anger etc. The term “Vegdharana” is used in Ayurveda for suppressing natural urges of body. Habitual suppression of vegas can lead to aggravation of vata dosha in body causing nervine disorders. Non suppressible urges There are 13 types of natural urges which should not be suppressed by healthy individuals:-

1. Urge for urination – The body excretes water soluble waste products like urea, creatinine though urine. Kidney filtrate the blood and removes the waste particles in the form of urine from body. It is also important for maintaining water and salt balance in the body. Regular habit of holding urine may lead to sedimentation of waste particles in bladder which can be absorbed back in body leading to various diseases. Consequences of suppressing urge for urination habitually are:- pain in pelvic region, abdominal distension, burning micturition, headache and stone formation.

2. Urge for defecation – The assimilation of food nutrients in body and formation of waste products occur in the intestines. The intestines contract and relax through nervous stimulation which pushes the food particles forward and waste products out from the body as well. If the urge to defecate is suppressed, it leads to suppression of nervous stimulation which will decrease the intestinal motility and also may lead to absorption of waste products back in body. Consequences of suppressing urge to defecate are:- Pain in abdomen, Headache, Difficulty in passing flatus and feces, pain in calf muscles, gas formation and abdominal distension.

3. Suppressing seminal discharge – In males, during the heightened sexual stimulation, the body ejaculates a fluid composed of sperms and other secretions which is called as semen. Many individuals try to suppress the ejaculation in order to increase the time duration of sexual arousal, which may lead to weakening of nerves and reduced blood supply in genital organs. Consequences of suppressing urge for ejaculation are:- Pain in genital organs, Bodyache, Chest pain, Difficulty in urination, Pre mature ejaculation.

4. Suppression of flatus – During digestion process in the intestines, various bacteria act on the food particles and lead to its fermentation, as a result various gases are produced in the small amounts. If food stays for longer periods in large intestines then more amount of gases are produced which are released through anal route in the form of flatus. Consequences of suppressing flatus in the body can lead to:- Abdominal distension, difficulty in defecation or urination, pain in abdomen, headache, difficulty in breathing.

5. Suppression of vomiting – When contents of stomach are forcefully ejected through mouth then it is called as vomiting. Vomiting is a reflex through which stomach clears itself from harmful toxins and poisons. Recurrent vomiting should be treated as it may lead to dehydration, esophagitis or tear in esophagus. However if vomiting occurs once in a while, it is advisable not to control the impulse. Consequences of suppressing urge to vomit are :- Urticaria, Decreased appetite, hyper pigmentation in skin, swelling in any part of body, fever, skin diseases, nauseating feeling, inflammatory disorders in body.

6. Suppression of Sneezing – A sneeze is an involuntary expulsion of air from nose and mouth. When the sensitive mucus membrane of nose or throat is irritated, a mucus containing irritants are expelled out in the form of sneeze. Recurrent sneezing may be caused due to various allergens, cold or flu, dust, use of nasal sprays or due to any drug. Consequences of suppressing sneezing are:- Headache, Weakness of facial muscles, Diseases related to eyes, nose and throat.

7. Suppression of yawning – Yawning is an involuntary reflex which consists of wide opening of mouth and jaw along with deep inhalation of air followed by short exhalation. There are various theories regarding causes of yawning like improving alertness, improving the air circulation of brain, regulating the brain temperature and maintaining the ear pressure. Consequences of suppressing Yawning are:- Vata Dosha Aggravation, paralysis, Tremors in body.

8. Suppression of Hunger – Hunger is a physiological signal which signifies the need of body for food. The reflex of hunger is regulated by nervous signals, hormonal signals, signals from blood levels of glucose, protein and fat in blood. Consequences of suppressing Hunger are: – malnutrition, weakness, bodyache, decreased appetite, giddiness.

MANAGING DEPRESSION THROUGH AYURVEDA


Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a very commonly found mental health disorder that can be described as having persistently low mood, feeling of sadness and loss of interest in day to day activities.
Almost all of us have our blue days when we feel low or sad but if this feeling persists for weeks or months then it comes under the category of depression.
Fortunately depression is the most easily treatable mental disorder; therefore if depression seems to control you and keeping you away from living normal life, don’t hesitate to take proper healthcare advice.
There is no exact cause for depression; many factors can contribute for onset of depression like changes in hormonal levels in body, family history of major depressive disorder, chronic medical illness, stress, grief, substance abuse, seasonal changes, postpartum depression, etc.
The above mentioned factors alone or in combination cause alteration in neurochemicals in brain that lead to many symptoms of depression.

CLINICAL FEATURES

Sometimes Depression may be associated with episodes of abnormally elated mood and energized behavior which is then called as bipolar disorder

AYURVEDIC VIEW
In Ayurveda  all sorts of mental illnesses are mentioned under a broad term disease known as “Unmada”. Ayurveda describes Unmada as impairment of nine entities which are – Mana(feelings), Budhhi (intelligence), Chetna (alertness), Gyan (Knowledge), Smriti (memory), Bhakti (interest), Sheela (Character), Chesta (Physical activity), Aachar (conduct).
Dysfunction in one or more of above mentioned entities lead to signs and symptoms of Unmada
Causes of Unmada according to Ayurvedic literatures include – intake of incompatible diet, contaminated diet, insult towards teachers and elders, spiritual causes, mental shock, excessive fear, greed, attachment, grief, etc,
The above mentioned causes lead to aggravation of Doshas (Vata,Pitta or Kapha) in Hridaya. (Hridaya here can be taken as parts of brain related to thinking, emotions and cognition) and manovahi srotasa (Channels or neurotransmittors responsible for communication of brain with body) leading to “Unmada”.
Unmada has been classified into five types – Vataja, Pittaja, Kaphaja, Sannipataja (combination of all three doshas) and Agantuja (Due to external sources like substance abuse, intoxication or poison).
Depression can be correlated with Kaphaja Unmada due to resemblance in clinical features.
In Ayurvedic literatures term “Mano – avsada” has also been mentioned in different places which is also related to Depression.

Prodromal symptoms
In Ayurveda prodromal symptoms are mentioned for “Unmada”, which are also commonly seen in cases of depression like loss of enthusiasm in any activity, loss of interest in food or meals, having bad dreams, palpitations which are described as “ghabrahat” in hindi by patient.
Clinical features of Kaphaja and Vataja Unmada are similar to depression like loss of lustre, weakness, fatigue, irrelevant body gestures, absent mindedness, decreased digestive power, impaired thought, preferring to be alone, talking very less from usual, excessive or less sleep.

Management

No two people are affected the same way by depression and therefore treatment method can differ from one patient to another. In Ayurveda treatment for depression includes three regimen
1)    Satvavjaya (Psychiatric counseling)
2)    Drugs
3)    Panchkarma therapies

1.    Satvavjaya treatment includes understanding the psyche of the patient, building the rapport with the patient, resolving the false beliefs or providing the solution to the problems,reassurance and providing motivation for coming out through the situation.
2.    Medicines – Medicines are given when psychiatric counseling alone is not suffiecient. Medicinal part includes use of deepana pachana herbs as Agni status in case of depression is very low, use of herbs having Vata Kapha dosha balancing properties along with neuroprotective functions  –  for eg – Vacha (Acorus calamus), Jyotishmati (celastrus panniculatus), , Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Ajmoda (Carum bulbocastanum).
lack of strength or fatigue is present then use of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is very benficial.
In cases of anxiety or bipolar mood disorders use ofJatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi) and Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) is very effective.
Some popular Ayurvedic formulations include  – Saraswat churna, Kalyanak Ghrita, Yogendra Rasa, Saraswatarishta, Lashunadi Ghrita
3.    Panchakarma modalities are adopted according to the condition of the patient. One Panchkarma therapy called as virechana (Therapeutic purgation) helps in improving the Agni status of body and also helps in detoxifying the body. Another Panchakarma very commonly used in such cases is called as Nasya in which medicine is admistered through nostrils,the administered medicinal formulation helps in improving the functioning and relaxing the brain.

Some lifestyle modifications which should be done on patient’s end include –

1.    Always be grateful for the good things in life and avoid unnecessary negative thoughts.
2.    Waking up early – our brain releases certain hormones in circadian rhythm (Day- night pattern) which are disturbed by habit of waking up late. Therefore for having fully functional brain and undisturbed hormonal functions one should wake up early. It also helps in medicines to work faster.
3.    Exercise – Exercising has been studied to improve serotonin levels in brain which helps us in feeling happy and active. It also helps in improving self-confidence. Daily habit of walking/ jogging/swimming or any outdoor sport should be cultivated.
4.    Diet – Drink 3- 4 litres of water, eat lots of vegetables and food and avoid excessive salty and spicy foods.
Some specific food items which should be included in diet are walnuts, almonds,apricots, sprouts, wheat germ, tomato, flaxseeds, Berries, Fish, Mushrooms and Green tea.

5.    Yoga poses like Sarvangasana, Halasana, Vrikshasana, Shirsasana, Simhasana and pranayama helps in improving the blood circulation towards brain which in turn causes improved concentration power, relaxation of mind, controlling the emotions and correction of thought process.

CONCEPT OF INCOMPATIBLE DIET IN AYURVEDA


Anyone who follows Ayurveda must have heard of “Viruddhahar” or Incompatible diet concept . In this Article we will learn what Incompatible diet is and how it affects our body.
Our body needs continuous fuel in the form of food to work incessantly. The food we eat gets broken into smaller form through digestion and turns into a different byproduct. Our body gets nourishment from the food only after its proper Digestion.
If the food product hinders the absorption of other nutrient or they combine to form a different chemical which is harmful for the body then it is called Incompatible diet.
According to Ayurvedic texts, certain foods or combinations which have the opposite property to the body tissues (Dhatu) are called as Viruddhahar (Incompatible diet).
Such diet aggravates all Doshas in body.

SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION

Scientifically it has been studied that on Regular intake of incompatible diet body acts against it through defense cells. This starts an inflammatory process at intestinal walls leading to various bowel related problems. This also results in weakening of gut barrier system leading to absorption of unwanted byproducts or self antigens in blood, these toxins while circulating through blood stream get situated on body tissues which show molecular resemblance with them, as a result immune system gets activated to wipe out the toxins and even attacks its own body tissue (under confusion due to the resemblance in molecular structure).  This Autoimmunity may lead to Formation of various autoimmune diseases in body.

TYPES OF INCOMPATIBLE DIET

According to Ayurveda, there are 18 ways in which a diet can turn out to be incompatible for body

3.    Agni (Digestive fire)

6.    Dosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha)

10.    Avastha (state of health)
11.    Kram (sequence)
12.    Parihar (characteristics of food)
13.    Upachar (treatment)
14.    Paak (cooking)

16.    Hriday Viruddha (Not according to your liking)
17.    Sampad (richness of quality)
18.    Vidhi (rules for eating)
To make this concept less complicated and easy to practise .We have enlisted most common incompatible diets you can easily avoid in day to day life.
However if you take these kind of diets once in a while, have High Body Metabolism and exercise regularly then such diets are not harmful for you.

INCOMPATIBLE DIET COMBINATIONS
1.    Don’t Combine Milk with Fruits except Dates – 80% of milk protein is “casein” which is already a slow digesting protein. Eating fruits with milk like in Milkshakes or smoothies causes agglutination of casein protein which further slows down its digestion and absorption. As a result it stays for longer time in intestines which can lead to gas formation, indigestion, belching , loose motions or nausea, vomiting.
2.    Avoid taking Milk with or after Fish, Meat or Chicken –  Non veg items and milk are rich source of protein, both take long time to digest and need different types of enzymes for digestion. Taking both these items together makes the body to work harder and consume more energy. It may even result in incomplete digestion forming different kind of molecules which are harmful for body. Regular consumption of this combination may lead to Fatigue, heaviness, stiffness in body or any sort of allergy  in skin or body
3.    Avoid taking Milk immediately after Radish, Drumstick, Basil , Garlic and Green leafy vegetables. Milk hampers their digestion in body also its protein interacts with them creating toxins in the body which are harmful for the skin. Calcium content of milk also hinders the absorption of iron contained in green leafy vegetables from body.
4.    Milk is a whole food in itself and it requires proper time to digest in body. don’t take anything for at least 2 hrs before or after taking 1 glass of milk and always take Luke warm milk because it is easy to digest.
5.    Avoid heating the Honey – Honey is made by bees from nectar of different kind of flowers. Therefore Honey contains different types of complex sugars. Heating the honey leads to reaction between its protein and sugar contents. Heating honey also produces a chemical called hydroxymethyl furfuraldehyde (HMF) as well as alters the chemical content in other ways (eg: increased peroxides). These chemicals have deleterious effects on body.
6.    Avoid Taking Raw and cooked food Together – This is widely practiced in western countries.  Raw food and cooked need different amount of digestive acids and enzymes to digest in body. Taking both of them together confuses the digestive system of our body resulting in incomplete digestion of food. This can lead to constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, belching or heaviness in body. Eat raw food first and after a gap of 30 mins to 1 hour you can take cooked food.
7.    Avoid taking Curd and milk together – Curd intake is very beneficial for digestion of body but combining it with milk should be avoided as it leads to slower digestion and acidity.
8.    Do not take curd at night – At night our digestion is relatively slow. Eating curd at night leads to its slow digestion and creates mucus in the intestines which may lead to swelling in face and fingers in morning, cold , cough, heaviness or other digestive problems. If you have to take curd at night you can add black pepper powder to it or take buttermilk instead.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF PITTA DOSHA


According to Ayurvedic science, our body functions on harmonic balance of three Doshas namely Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three Doshas or three bio physical energies are like a tripod of life.

Pitta Dosha

Pitta word has been derived from Sanskrit word “Tap Santape”. “Santaap” means heat.

Every cellular function in which heat or energy is produced is due to Pitta Dosha.

Panch Mahabhoot Composition of Pitta Dosha are – Agni ( Fire) and Jala (Water).

Pitta Dosha is fiery in nature. When anything comes in contact with fire its molecular structure is transformed into another form. Similarly, when anything comes in contact with Pitta dosha in body it is transformed or metabolized into some other form.

Characterictics of Pitta Dosha are – Ushna (Hot), sneha (Oily), tikshna (Sharp), Drava(Moist), Amla (Sour), Sara (Fluid).

Pitta Dosha governs digestion and metabolism related functions of body. Some examples of Pitta Dosha functions are :-

1.Digestion – It is the main function of Pitta dosha. The food which is brought in stomach by Vata Dosha is acted upon by Pitta dosha. Pitta churns and digests the food and makes it ready to be absorbed by the body. The main part of digestion takes place in stomach and first part of small intestine (duodenum). According to Ayurveda, this is the place where Jatharagni (digestive fire) resides. Pitta dosha regulates hunger and thirst in body.

Apart from general digestion, Pitta dosha also regulates the action of various enzymes on food particles. Liver and Pancreas are main organs which secrete various enzymes for breaking down the glucose, protein and fat from ingested food. The enzymatic action is due to Pitta dosha only. If Pitta Dosha functioning is hampered it leads to improper digestion of food which causes accumulation of various undigested toxins in body called as “Aam” in Ayurveda. Aam is a root cause of many diseases.

2. Digestion at cellular level – The food we eat helps in providing energy to cells which is stored in the form of ATP. Whenever cell needs to perform function it breaks down the Stored ATP to liberate heat and energy. This stored and released energy is all governed by Pitta Dosha.

3. Regulation of body temperature – Our body cells function best under a particular temperature range which is 36.5°C – 37.2°C. This temperature is regulated in body by a portion of brain hypothalamus, sweat glands, skin and blood vessels. Pitta Dosha governs this regulation according to external environment. If Pitta Dosha is aggravated or dominant in Body then such persons develop heat intolerance and are affected by sun tan, heat stroke, hot flashes more commonly than others.

4. Provides vision – Just like the fire in the sun removes darkness and brings light, in the same way the fiery Pitta dosha residing in eyes enables us to see. Pitta dosha governs the entering of light rays in eyes and the image formation in retina. This image is further transcript in brain by Vata Dosha.

5. Provides colour to skin – Due to its metabolic function, Pitta dosha governs the formation of melanin pigment in skin giving the skin its particular colour. All types of pigments in body cells are governed by Pitta Dosha. Pitta dosha also helps in formation of Haemoglobin pigment which gives the particular red colour to RBC’s. Healthy blood gives a peculiar glow to skin. If Pitta dosha is not functioning properly it can give rise to various blood and skin disorders.

6. Other functions of Pitta dosha are – controlling sweat production, governs functioning of brain like intelligence, courage, anger and other psychological emotions.

Acharyas have divided Pitta Dosha into Five types on the basis of their predominant area of functions. These are -Pachaka Pitta, Ranjaka Pitta, Bhrajaka Pitta, Alochaka Pitta and Sadhaka Pitta,

1) Pachaka Pitta – Pachaka Pitta helps in digestion and metabolism. Helps in action of digestive enzymes, helps in separation of nutrients from the waste material, and governs assimilation of nutrients in the blood stream so it can be carried to all cells of body. It also governs the action of other four types of Pitta. In short it provides heat and energy to every cell of body.

2) Ranjaka Pita – “Ranjana” word means colouration. Ranjaka Pitta provides the red colour to blood; therefore, it helps in formation of haemoglobin. At cellular level, synthesis of haemoglobin takes place at mitochondria and ribosome. These are the sites of action of Ranjaka Pitta. The breaking up of hemoglobin in spleen is also governed by Ranjaka Pitta .

3) Bhrajak Pitta – Predominant Area of function of Bhrajak Pitta is skin. It provides luster to skin. Manages the blood circulation for skin and also helps in absorption of oil, cream, pack or other medicines applied to skin.

4) Alochaka Pitta – Alochaka Pitta helps in perceiving vision. It provides luster to eyes. Its imbalance may lead to various vision disorders in eyes.

5) Sadhaka Pitta – Sadhaka Pitta provides understanding and intelligence. The signals received by brain are transformed by Sadhaka Pitta into understandable information. Medically it is called as cognition. Sadhaka Pitta also governs the instincts or will to act according to the perception which is called as conation. Thus Sadhaka Pitta controls cognition and conation.

If diet and Lifestyle of any individual are similar characteristics of Pitta Dosha then it may lead to aggravation of Pitta in body. For example – excessive intake of spicy, oily, fried or fermented food, junk foods, sour – unripe fruits, excessive intake coffee or tea, excessive intake of meat and alcoholic beverages, hot weather, hot and humid weather, mental stress, preparing for competitive examinations etc.

In case of Pitta Dosha vitiation, diet and lifestyle should be of opposite nature to pitta, viz. include lot of water in your diet, eat food which have cooling action on body like bottle gourd, ridged gourd, pumpkin, juicy fruits like water melon, musk melon, grapes, oranges, etc. Include Amla, coriander, cucumber, mint leaves in your daily diet. UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF VATA DOSHA


One of the basic fundamental concept given by Ayurveda is “Tridosha Concept”. “Tri –Three” and “dosha – bio elements” namely Vata, Pitta & Kapha. To understand the basics of Ayurveda, one must first understand about these three Doshas. These three doshas in harmony with each other are responsible for body constitution and all functions of every cell of body. The disturbance in balance between Vata, Pitta and Kapha leads to various physical and mental disorders.

Vata Dosha

Vata word is derived from Sanskrit word “Va gati Gandhanyo” which means “movement”.

Every cellular function related to motion is due to Vata dosha.

The properties of Vata Dosha are Rooksha (dryness), Laghu (Light), Sheeta (cold), Khara (Rough), Vishada (Non slimy), Chala (Mobile)

Panch Maha bhoota composition of Vata Dosha is Vayu (Air) and Akash (Space).

Vata dosha is not an anatomical entity in our body. It cannot be seen or touched. It can only be known through its functioning in the body. All functions of body which requires movement are due to Vata dosha. Some examples of function of Vata Dosha are :- transmission of glucose, protein, fat, water, sodium, Potassium, chloride or other ions from one cell to another, circulation of hormones in blood stream, Signal response of target cells which have receptors for particular hormone, transmission of electric signals by axons to cell body of neurons, sensory and motor functioning of nerves, muscle cells contraction and relaxation which help the body muscles to move, biological clock, receiving and sending of information through brain, awareness, thinking process, alertness, consciousness, language, our actions, emotions, throwing out the waste products from the body, growth and development of body, providing the particular shape to body, genetic constitution of body, cell division (mitosis and meiosis).

These all functions are related to some sort of movement in the cell. Therefore these all are physiological functions of Vata Dosha.

According to Acharyas, Vata Dosha is of prime importance amongst the three Doshas. It even controls the functioning of Pitta and Kapha dosha. If functioning of Vata dosha is disturbed, it hampers the functioning of Pitta and Kapha dosha as well.

In Ayurveda, five types of vata dosha are described i.e; Prana vayu, Udana Vayu, Samana Vayu, Vyana Vayu and Apana Vayu. These are distribution of vata dosha according to their different functions, for ex:-

1. All Physiological functions related to respiration, salivation, ingestion of food are governed by Prana vayu.

2. Self expression, speech, strength, vitality, enthusiasm are functions of Udana vayu.

3. Moving the food forward for digestion, absorption of food nutrients in blood stream, pushing the waste products forward in rectum for excretion, proper functioning of sweat glands, maintenance of osmotic and hydrostatic pressure are functions of Samana Vayu.

4. Maintenance of biological clock, contraction and relaxation of all voluntary and involuntary muscles of body, locomotion, blood circulation, rhythmic heart beat, pulse beat are functions of Vyana vayu.

5. Expulsion of urine and stool out from the body, semen ejaculation, regular menstruation, delivery of fetus are functions related to Apana vayu. In short, Apana Vayu governs any sort of elimination from the body.

Vata Dosha Manages very vital functions of body, therefore it is called as Aayu (Life) in Ayurveda. Health or disease of body depends on the proper state of vata dosha.

The properties of Vata Dosha are cold, rough, dry and light. The conditions similar to properties of Vata Dosha may lead to its over functioning, for eg. – eating dry, cold or stale food, Skipping meals or variable meal timings, excessive physical exertion, excessive intake of cold beverages, exposure to cold, dry weather, stress etc.

In case of aggravation of vata dosha, diet and daily routine should be opposite of Vata Dosha properties like include mild to moderate amounts of ghee in your diet, Eat fresh and warm food with light spices, avoid direct exposure of cold or dry air, take proper rest and have a proper diet and sleep routine, meditate regularly, include some vata dosha pacifying herbs in your daily regimen like tulsi, ginger, black cardamom and cinnamon.

How can we treat Acidity naturally


Acidity or Heartburn simply means over secretion of Hydrochloric acid in the stomach which leads to symptoms like burning sensation in chest or throat, Indigestion, flatulence, sour belching etc.

There are various factors responsible for acidity such as:-

  • Stress
  • Eating too much spicy & Non- vegetarian meals
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol
  • Other Digestive disorders like peptic ulcer, GERD, Hiatus Hernia etc.
  • Medicines like NSAID’s, Steroids, etc.

Of the above mentioned causes, one factor which is most commonly associated is, GERD (Gastroesophageal reflex disease).

It is a digestive disorder in which contents of stomach return back in the Oesophagus (food pipe).

GERD occurs when sphincter guarding the lower part of Oesophagus becomes weak and allows the food particles and stomach juices to flow back.

Another important disease which can cause acidity is Hiatus hernia. It is an abnormality where a part of stomach ascends into the Oesophagus (food pipe) through the opening in a diaphragm (Hiatus). Hiatus hernia may be asymptomatic but often lead to GERD.
